Husker Du means "Do you remember?" in Norwegian or Danish...apparently. I like trios and they were one of the most sonically unique and personally fucked-up of them all. Their records were expansive and their early live shows were a mess until they had released about 3 indie albums and gone through about 3 tour vans and then...became a true force of nature! It was the combination of extremly voluminous metallic noise mixed with a pure melodic sensibility along with the fact that they were regular midwestern unhipsters with an inherent bad dress-sense that made them worth loving up until the bitter end. They did what they were supposed to do: Write, record, tour, get signed and actually get good well beyond their own expectations. They formed in freezing Minneapolis in 1979, signed to infamous west coast punk rawk label SST in 1980, toured until they nearly killed each other and/or themselves before signing to WB in 1986 and made their best album of their career: "Warehouse: Songs and Stories ('87) and toured hard until the it all became too much. Drugs, nasty relationships, delusions of _____ (fill in the blanks and don't be shy) ground them to a halt too soon the same year. I miss them. Here's a clip of Husker Du from The Joan Rivers Show (aired for one season only I think) perfroming "Could You Be The One" (Joanny gets it wrong) from their only WB studio album in what must've been considered an "edgy & out-there" TV booking at the time (wish I had done that!). Drummer and chemical enthusiast Grant Hart got a haircut and bathed (!) just for the occasion. Sounds extra good, extra loud.
