Madness! Scandals! Punch-Ups & Piss-offs! Fleetwood Mac had it all and then some. And then some more. Only the two original namesake members exist within the current line-up which began as a group of blues purists in 1967, led by an extraodinary guitar virtuoso called Peter Green who once filled in for Eric Clapton in John Mayall's Bluesbrakers (McVie also did time in that band). Eventually he lost a lot more than the plot and ground to a hazy halt in 1970. In fact, future Thin Lizzy guitarist (WB Recordings Artists for one album - still in our catalog!) Gary Moore bought Green's last Mac-era guitar because he needed the dosh. If you're as perverse as me, you'll want to seek out his first post-Mac solo album called "End Of The Game" (still in print in Japan!), a cobled-together jam session where you can just about hear his wheels falling off the proverbial trolley in the studio. Whacky! Not too sure what was in the old Mac tour pipe but the two other guitar greats from the band, Danny Kirwin & Jeremy Spencer also fell out of their collective tree. Rusty pipes? Lead paint? Who the fuck knows but I know you know the story from 1975 onward when they finally got paid and became the "Bob, Caroll, Ted & Alice" of rock & roll (to say the least) that we love today. It's a wonder why VH1's "Behind The Music" didn't cancel all other episodes just to concentrate full-time on the spectacular true lives of the members of Fleetwood Mac who've lived in ways most of us can only dream of, fear or read about on pink-hued websites. My fave Mac story in true "Ripley's" fashion concerns an assembled completely bogus Fleetwood Mac who toured the US in the early '70's--and sold out arena's!!--while the tattered "real" Mac recuperated back home. It's so fucking genius... I wonder if some people are still involed in some degree of litigation to this very day. They are true survivors: Over 16 band members and twice as many managers in 41 years. They could've been The schizophrenic Polyphonic Spree on doctor's orders but you know what they say, "It's a might long way down rock & roll, from the Bradford docks to the Hollywood Bowl." Check out this clip of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac playing the instrumental "Albatross," from some Euro TV show. It is one of the most beautiful Mac recordings ever.
