New Orleans manic smart-rockers MUTEMATH made TV history last night, Sep 19th, by being the first-ever band to perform on national TV...backwards. Easy. The insane idea of attempting to recreate their viral breakthrough video for the track "Typical," on TV had somehow become less of a joke and more of a reality when the fine folks at ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live agreed to risk (someone else's)life and limb to pull it off. Requirements: Several gallons of paint, a ton of confetti, cases of Silly String, thousands of Christmas lights, 4 leaf blowers, 4 "cocoons", 4 gallons of grape juice (not for drinking), smashable lights & instruments, a spool of fishing line, one set of knee pads and 4 sleepless musicians and their crew. Sounds absolutely reasonable. Depart Canada by 4:30AM, load-in, set up, rehearse, soundcheck, roll tape, load-out, try to sleep and depart LA by 6:00AM for US tour. No problem.
"Nice One, mate" Award goes out to A&R rep Perry Watts-Russel who agreed to stand-in as body double during rehearsals as the human "action painting" and ended up swallowing mouthfulls of purple & green toxic fluids in the name of art and history. Nice work boys! See MM in at San Diego Street Scene on Sep 23, and in LA Sep 27 at the Avalon.
